Amazon.com Product Description
With a stealthy, pitch black paint scheme, 100 millimeters of plush front suspension, and an advanced four bar rear suspension system, the Mongoose Pro Wing Elite is ready to hit the trails right out of the box. Designed as a formidable and versatile trail bike, the Pro Wing Elite is designed to tackle a variety of varied terrain with ease--including single track, technical climbing, and simply cruising around the neighborhood. The bike's 3.5-inches of supple, yet efficient rear travel and optimal overall weight will allow it to descend with ease as well as climb like a nimble mountain goat. To ensure that those thrilling descents stop when you want them to, a Tektro mechanical disc brake system comes outfitted on the bike. The advanced braking system allows for easy one or two finger braking, and the system uses standard bicycle brake cables instead of hydraulic fluid, so there's no need to worry about complicated brake maintenance. Other great features include a durable 24-speed Shimano drivetrain, beefy double wall alloy rims, and trail hungry 26 x 1.95-inch tires.

About Mongoose
In 1974, BMX Products, Inc., later to be known as Mongoose Bicycles, launched from a humble garage. The first of its kind, the BMX bicycle was named after bicycle motocross and was designed to fit the needs of the rough-and-tumble dirt-racing pastime that took its toll on wheels and bicycles. The heavy-duty, one-piece cast-aluminum Mongoose Motomag wheel was soon born, and it was the first competition-ready BMX bicycle available. Skip Hess, while in Australia pursuing his motor sports passion, came into contact with a strange and unusual cat-size animal--the mongoose. Known for its passive nature while unprovoked, yet vicious and aggressive enough to kill a threatening Cobra twice its size, the Mongoose impressed Hess, who quickly registered the Mongoose trademark for his new bicycle racing frame.

The Expert BMX bicycle model, which is still a cornerstone of the Mongoose BMX line today, was introduced in 1980. Shortly after, Mongoose captured the first ever ABA National #1 Cruiser Title. Previously known for the 20-inch bicycle, this title signaled the re-direction of Mongoose bicycles to larger-wheeled, adult-sized models. Several years later, Mongoose continues to dominate the cruiser racing circuit with six National No. 1 Cruiser titles, leading to the introduction of adult-sized Mongoose all-terrain bicycles (ATBs).

In 1992, Mongoose pioneered the full-suspension market with the introduction of the Amplifier. This design is still the most-copied suspension design in the market. Several year later, Mongoose launched the Newman adult bicycle frame, which is proven to be 15% stronger than any other bike frame in the market. The design, while functionally sound, also raised eyebrows because of its distinctive look.

In the next few years, Mongoose increased its marketing focus to dominate the bicycle industry, and more important, extend beyond it. The Mongoose brand marketing initiative makes more than 100 million impressions. Mongoose's brand awareness increased by over 130% in 1999 and solidifies the No. 2 market share position in units and dollars. Mongoose was acquired by Pacific Cycle, LLC, and continues to grow and prosper with more than 40 models of BMX, mountain, trail, freestyle, jumping, comfort, road, and cyclocross bikes.

4 out of 5 stars WIng Elite - one year later   November 11, 2008
DL (SLC, Utah)
I've owned the wing elite now for a little over a year, and have tried my best to break it, with limited sucess I might add. Here in Utah, there are plenty of different kinds of terrain from dirt to slick rock, so I have tried the bike over varying conditions. My take:
Pros:
-Good quality for the price
-Excellent tires/rims
-Good Pedals

Cons:
-Its a fairly heavy bike, not a gravity bomb, but could be a little lighter for climbing
-the front shocks are the worst part of the bike - replace them
-could use a better seat

All in all, if you replace the front shocks, you will have a very good all purpose mtn bike for a very good price.

4 out of 5 stars Great value   November 10, 2008
Dede
I'm a casual rider that uses the bike mainly on the road to cruise with my wife. However, I was once very much into bikes, so I wanted a good one, especially regarding components, so I thought this one was a great deal, and so it is. The Shimano Acera works great, much better than the Alivio I had on my other bike. The front suspensions has a very good travel range and the rear one (I had never ridden a bike with rear suspension) seems a little to hard even on the softest setting, but that's just me being picky.
The only BIG FLAW is its weight. It's heavier than my wife's steel frame bike. I heard dual suspension bikes are heavier anyway, and 5 lbs more or less won't change the way I ride anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice bike for the money   August 29, 2008

Though a bit heavier than I would have liked, it was packaged well when shipped, and shipped quickly. It is a great looking bike, and the shifting components are good for the money. Front and rear disc brakes are so nice versus the typical V-brakes. Front wheel was shipped bent, but Amazon made good on the problem by reimbursing me for the expense.

3 out of 5 stars Nice but HEAVY ... 3 1/2 stars   August 24, 2008

Bike looks great and functions nicely after a short time putting the bars on, the pedals and the wheels. The gears wouldn't change properly and alhtough I'm handy w/ all things mechanical I couldn't dial in the adjustments no matter what. Took it to a bike shop to have them look at it and said everything was jacked up, and that was certainly true. Another $40 to have it tuned and everything is well now. Brakes, gears.. good.

BUT... THIS BIKE IS HEAVY! There's no getting around that. I didn't notice the weight stated on the description and just assumed it would be lighter than the tank it is.

Also, frame size I got was 16". I'm 5'8" legs about 31". Seat post is a bit long but I don't have to cut it like other posters. If the option was available I would have gotten a 17" frame.

So the bottom line, it looks great, is dog heavy but functions nicely. For a casual rider like me.. it's good to go.

5 out of 5 stars great bvike,terrific ride   August 5, 2008

Delivery was prompt, the fedex guy even carried it to our 2nd floor!I have never assembled a bike and i could do it effortlessly in about 20 minutes. All that you have to do is fit the front tire, reflectors and seat post.the derallieurs come pre-tuned,so you are ready to ride 30 minutes after the package arrives.
I ride the bike once a week on off-road trails.Handling is terrific, although the rear derallieur can get stuck once in a while.I take meticulous care of the mechanism, wash & oil after each ride, tuned perfectly,so the rear derallieur thing is a bit of a let down when i take to steep uphills although it does not glitch all the time.

Everyone's correct abt the seat post.it was too long for me and I'm 5' 9'' and I had to cut it,but now the seat post is loose most of the time and i have had to tape it for extra grip.

aside from that the front shocks, disc brakes, kenda komodo tires are a dream.the thumb shifters work effortlessly.take good care of the front shocks and you can hear them work.I travel on all sorts of terrain on my rides(asphalt, grass, gravel, mud)and so far have not had any handling or stopping issues.

the paint scheme is ordinary but if you are looking for performance over looks, this is the bike to own.

P.S.-Always wear your helmet

happy mountain biking
