After 1 year.... December 2, 2008 PellaCPC (Northern Wisconsin) We bought two of these last Christmas for our 5 & 6 year old sons. Being a cautious person by nature, I was a bit apprehensive about the safety of a ride on like this. However, after seeing it in person at our local wholesale club, and comparing it to the quality of the similarly priced plastic ride-ons, I was sold. The quality of build is excellent. It has a heavy duty aluminum frame and pnematic tires. Needless to say, our boys were elated (as I would have been if they had toys like this when I was small). We set up in the garage, as there was lots of snow outside. (I would not recommend this.) Our oldest strapped on his helmet, got on and and hit the throttle. Before I knew it, he had come to a stop against my now broken storage shelf. As I said, this would be much better attempted outside. After examining the quad (and the boy) we concluded no harm done, and an excellent lesson learned. The next day, we tried again outside, with much better success. The boys very quickly learned to handle the quads, and were soon buzzing around like experts. A year later, I can say without hesitation that it was an excellent purchase. We started a very large garden, and the quads came in for their share of duty when we were picking rocks. After pulling the wagon by hand a few times, my oldest son had an idea - he ran for his quad and asked me to help him hook up the wagon. Because of the sturdy metal frame, we were able to do so, and I watched carefully to see that they started with a small load. I didn't want an expensive toy broken. The quad pulled a load of rocks and a boy no problem. I admonished my sons to not overload the wagon and they continued hauling I don't know how many loads to the rockpile. They have used the machines all summer for everthing from picking up grass clippings, to racing and everything in between. The units have been charged countless times with no problems. We typically get close to an hour of use out of a charge for normal playing. I see that there are multiple reviews with battery issues, but this was not our experience. I don't know that it is right to down-rate the overall score for an issue that the company is apparently more then willing to take care of. Stability had not been much of an issue for us - we had one tip-over that I can think of with no harm done. This was caused by turning sharply on a hill. I would like if there was a parent controlled low speed setting for the smaller children. A remote disconnect would also be nice for the learning period. However, even my 3 year old can now run the quads like an expert. (Although I must say, he is one of those people that can do anything he tries, so I'm not sure that this is an endorsement for all 3 year olds. I wouldn't have put his older brother on it at that age.) Just make sure that they wear the appropriate protective gear. All in all, one of the most used toys in our household by our 3 busy boys. Nothing has broken yet, and for anyone that has 3 little boys, this may in fact be the best endorsement of all.
Best ride on Electric November 23, 2008 Gerilynn (Idaho) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We bought 2 for our 5 & 7 yr old GIRLS! They absolutely love them; it snowed every week all winter so they learned to ride in the slick snow.....which was a lot more fun then the gravel that made them tipsy. The 7 yr old rides it up on 2 wheels all the time and jumps with it. We always keep them in during the cold to protect the batteries. They actually go alot faster and last 2-3 hours just fine. Now the one is broke down because they washed it and got something wet....Santa will be fixing it for under the tree! We are looking at the Razor dirt bike maybe for the older girl. I think they have learned alot about handling, & driving by playing with them. I can also ride it around the house and to the barn. I highly recomend if you have a large area outside....they will need it!
Where was this when I was a kid..... October 27, 2008 Morley Dotes (Flushing, New York USA) I just got this for my son for his fifth birthday. He's 47 inches tall, and his size is fine, and he does have room to grow. We used it right out of the box. All you have to do is attach the handle bars (tools included) and that took about 2 minutes. The battery had a charge so my son started to ride it. He loves it. At first I was worried, and kept my hand on the throttle and jogged next to him and found that I could easily keep up, and I'm no sprinter. After I was a bit more confident with his ability, I let him on his own.....somewhat.....I trailed behind where there is a bar that you can hold. This quad doesn't have enough torque to pull you, at least not on the grass (I didn't try it on a drive way). Just lift the back and the rear wheels spin along, but since this is not four wheel drive, it's pretty easy to control. As for previous posts regards battery trouble, we had no trouble out of the box, and my son rode for almost an hour and did not kill the battery. The construction looks really good. Throttle response is surprisingly good and with practice my son was able to modulate the speed fairly easily. This quad is in a class all its own. Not only is it built tough, as well as have a nice little shock suspension, but what really makes this superior are the tires. They are not hard plastic, but rather rubber, air filled (pneumatic I believe they are called). They have incredible grip, even on wet grass going uphill. The only thing I don't like about this is the weight limit of 120 pounds, because it means I can't ride it! My son never came close to rolling this vehicle, which was a real worry at first. I should note that my son still uses training wheels on his two-wheeler, and he's tipped that over several times. Pads are a must, and you have to be careful because even though this isn't that fast, it accelerates quickly, so watch for that. Front and rear bumpers/guards are also nice. Please remember that this is NOT four wheel drive. Also, the brake is good, but may need a bit of adjustment. If you have a question, leave me a comment and I will answer the best I can.....oh, and as others have already mentioned, do not let the battery be exposed to freezing temperatures, there were several warnings for that. I don't know what a second battery costs or how easy it would be to change it, but I am going to try to find out, because it would be great to have one as back-up.....now if they could make one for us 200 pounders! ;-)
Razor Quad October 21, 2008 R. Breen (Illinois) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Purchased for 6 yo birthday. He and his 4 yo brother love it to death. The brake is kinda big for their little hands, but it works. Had the PP Gator truck and this is so much better. Based on their current usage I have to charge it 4 days a weeks. We get about 50 minutes out of it per time.
Great chasis for my next project September 25, 2008 Garth Olivier (Dallas TX) Smaller than I envisioned. Good construction Charged and worked well, Now to deconstruct to become chasis for my next outdoor robot for DPRG.
